The EORI Number is used on the territory of the European Union since 2009. It is a unique identification number which is assigned to businesses for customs purposes when registering in the System of Registration and Identification of Entrepreneurs. The key purpose of the EORI system is to speed up customs procedures for businesses and individuals who are engaged in economic activities in the EU or are involved in customs operations.
The EORI number is obligatory for participants of foreign economic activities involved in import, transit and export. One person / company can have only one (valid) EORI number, which must be used for any customs-related activity in the EU.
Companies that are located on European Union territory are assigned the EORI number by the customs authorities of the member state in which they are established and registered. Businesses located outside the EU can also obtain an EORI number in Germany. The important prerequisite that Germany is the first country that they transit within the European Union.
Because of the Brexit, all EORI numbers issued in Great Britain are no longer valid since 1st January 2021. If your company is affected by this, we will be happy to help you apply for a new EORI number in Germany.
Although the EORI Number is obligatory for many companies, is not automatically assigned - you have to apply for it. After the company formation, you can apply for an EORI number here.
It takes usually between 1 and 4 weeks to get an EORI Number if you have a registered German entity. A tax number is not mandatory to register for an EORI number. The application is processed by the German customs office and is free of charge for you.
